MAIN MONTHLY MEETING
August 23 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Casual dinner meeting, usually with a speaker. Come at 6:30 pm for dinner. Speaker will start at 7:30.
Dr. John Doyle will be presenting “The Meaning and Purpose of Life: A Psychological and Philosophical Exploration“
The meaning and purpose of life have been subjects of profound exploration in both philosophical and psychological realms. Philosophically, existentialism asserts that individuals must create their own meaning through choices and actions, as existence precedes essence. Key figures like Jean-Paul Sartre and Søren Kierkegaard emphasize personal responsibility and authenticity. Contrasting existentialism, nihilism claims life lacks inherent meaning, while humanism suggests meaning is found through human connections and achievements. Stoicism, focusing on virtue and rationality, teaches that inner peace and acceptance of fate can provide a sense of purpose.
Psychologically, Victor Frankl’s logotherapy highlights finding meaning even in suffering, asserting that our primary drive is the pursuit of meaningful experiences. Positive psychology underscores the importance of strengths and well-being, with meaning being a key aspect of a fulfilling life. Therapeutic approaches like Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), existential therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offer strategies for individuals struggling with feelings of meaninglessness. These therapies focus on challenging negative beliefs, embracing personal values, and engaging in meaningful activities to combat depression and foster a sense of purpose.
The Main Monthly Meeting will be available both in person, at Jonathan’s Restaurant, as well as via Zoom.
